I admit it, I tend to over-dress for everything. I’ve been told in jobs that I need to dress more casual. I’ve been to countless parties and get-togethers where the host has a moment of anxiety when I arrive, exclaiming that they should’ve specified casual and relaxed.
This can be a bit mortifying…I think it takes some strength in self to dress up when you want to, for yourself and your comfort. I think that fashion can be therapeutic…and the way that works is by listening to yourself, wearing what feels good to you. Yet it isn’t always easy…can you think of a time when your outfit was questioned? I can think of a ton and it was always when I was dressing for myself and personal comfort.
My excuse used to be that I wore skirts and dresses because they were more comfy and easy. In the past year though, I’ve really dug becoming more of a trouser-girl and find myself only doing “dressy” pants. The thing is, dressing “up” often feels more relaxed to me than the alternative. I hate binding dresses and skin-digging heels as much as the next girl but even more so, I hate jeans that are tight on the waist, jeans that are too loose and rising tops that are not tucked in. These things make me feel awkward and self conscious, they are the height of uncomfort. Give me a little black dress to lounge in any day over tee shirts and denim!
While I’ve been known to sprawl about in vintage robes and nightgowns, I have bumming-it clothes like everyone else. My at-home uniform is black boot cut leggings and a black stretch tee. But unless I am just running errands chances are I’ll be dressed-up when I leave the house.
What are you comfort clothes? What clothes do you find uncomfortable and unbearable? Are you a trouser-girl, dress-girl or jeans-girl?

I have an alternating problem, where I am either totally, horrendously OVERDRESSED or UNDERDRESSED. I wore a giant taffeta skirt and sequinned top to my friends extremely casual wedding; jeans and a plaid shirt to a formal fundraiser at the Shedd. I know what the dress codes are, I just…want…to wear…something…else. So I feel you.
My daily uniform is skinny jeans, a black tshirt, sequin converse and a grey cardigan or black blazer on cold days like today. I deviate from it as we all do, but I always come back to the old favourites.

Oh I totally feel you on the over/under. Rather than under I sometimes just border on inappropriate. I once went to a private fancy shmancy event also at the Shedd wearing a mini white dickies nurse dress and tall heels. Yeah for some reason I just can’t get on board with a dress-code.
Since last fall my everyday wardrobe has consisted of throwing a black skirt over the leggings and wrapping myself in black scarves and shawls if I am going to leave the house. Something about having a go-to outfit just feels nice.
I get the overdressed comment a lot. I’m super short (we’re talking 5’1″, 5’2″ on a tall day), so I am almost always wearing heels – even if it’s just to the grocery store or to sit out and talk on my neighbor’s patio. I also have a penchant for skirts and dresses, and like you, tend towards dressier or vintage styled pants. I’d rather be overdressed than underdressed, and I do think it’s funny when people ask me “You look nice, where are you going?”. To be fair, I think the purple hair is an uenxpected offset to the dressiness…

I am also only 5’1, elf sized bloggers unite!! I can remember even in highschool I wore lots of black dresses and va-va-voom rockabilly inspired numbers to school. This was always met with curiosity and something almost of resentment from my classmates. Thanks for sharing
Do I over dress? Please, I live in the Pacific NW, if your outfit doesn’t include fleece and Teva sandals you are over dressed! Really! I saw a Cross-dresser at a club who was wearing fabulous high heels (great legs too), short short hot pants, and…a fleece jacket. Wow!
I am very fond of skirts and dresses in the summer. I love heels but I hike around alot for my job and it would not be practical. I keep buying the heels though. I love to “dress up” but I wouldn’t want to be compelled to do it all the time. Being a contrary person by nature I’d probably wear fleece!
In high school I used to wear 1950′s prom dresses, opera length gloves, faux pearls and black combat boots or jeans with leather riding-type boots, a khaki army jacket, and an ammo belt. Real bullet casings, I later found out they had been “live” blanks – oops. I got suspended that day. Not sure if it was because I dressed up too much or dressed down…
Love the blog, love the “What I Wore” feature, so fun!

Im short also, same height as you guys, but I like it, so i barely ever wear heels, the last time i did was on my birthday when me and ash went out to a nice restaurant in a limo lol.
My comfort clothes tend to involve long swaying colorful/bright skirts, that usually end just below my knees, i think they are loose, comfortable, pretty and i like the way they move freely, in summer last year though I was rarely found out of my super short shorts and a pair of flip flops. Jeans and trousers really annoy the hell out of me unless its super cold outside.
i think there is an image i try to convey with the skirts i wear, someone nurturing, soft, caring, mature and elegant, as well as someone approachable and not intimidating in anyway. I could never got along with short skirts for some reason, I think overall it’s a stereotypically ‘feminine’ image I make of myself.
I’m more of a jeans/trousers type girl, and now really good with heels. I’m too much of a tomboy, wrapped up in being too much of a clutz. I’m constantly tripping over things, and sprawling at wierd angles over friends floors, couches and other available surfaces. So really, the jeans/trousers are to preserve my dignitiy. I do try to dress up in other ways though – nice tops, accessories etc.

Kenjey- Lol @ the drag queen in fleece, oh my that is a sight. Oooh I love your highschool look, amazing! I used to constantly get sent to the principles office for wearing pyramid studded belts and studded cuffs and collars, but nothing that fabulous!
Candice- The look you described is exactly how I would imagine you to look and dress! Love that you’ve found a style that feels good for you!
Miss P- lol I relate yr clumsiness, I’m no graceful swan myself! I think someone trousers can often look dressier than dresses. I mean think about it, with a dress you are just wearing one piece of cloth but with pants you’ve got to put an outfit together!
I must like this look a lot cos its how i dress most of the time.
Lol I wonder though if I am actually a nurturing, gentle person etc or if that’s just how i want to be perceived, or even if the clothes simply influence the character.
Nah, I think at least a part of me is that type of character and it must be the side of me I adore most because it’s the one I want people to see me as and the side of me I want to share with people, or to speak out to those I have never met before.
I do love to dress up, I love my black and red dresses and my black heels, I think they make for sexy and classy outfits, but what I’ve come to dislike about dressing like that is how much men will try and chat you up or flirt with you, it makes me feel very uncomfortable, so i barely do it. Its our one year anniversary on sunday 13th september though so if the weather turns out nice Im hoping to slip back into one of my fave dresses and hopefully stun my bf hehe!
Beautiful and feminine! I love the broch and pink shoes, I think this looks soft and angelic <3

I feel comfortable in anything that doesn’t show my tummy and isn’t too form fitting around it.
I wish I had 365 dresses of any type, to wear one every day of the year. I absolutely love dresses, & always feel comfortable in them.
But because I don’t have that many dresses–I tend to be a dress down type of girl. I prefer flats over heels on a regular basis, & I think the laid back look really makes me feel more comfortable than dressing to the nines.
