Lately I’ve been getting really close to the 8-year-old inside of me. She’s quite a fantastical person. I’ve been checking in with her daily while I’m going through tough spots, making sure she is okay. I’ve also just been engaging her more, listening to her and it has been coming out in what I wear. I thrifted this soft heather-gray skirt last week and it has become Little Rabbit’s favorite piece of clothing. A few reasons: 1.) It is sooo comfy and it is kind of an adventurer’s skirt as you can wear it in almost any weather or situation. (It also has a really great swishy effect, quite dramatic) 2.) It is perfect for her vast imagination. Around Little Rabbit’s age fantasy morphed from Princesses and glamour to strong but lost female heroines. These characters were often in hard situations: being dirt poor, lost or on a journey. This time was filled with fantasies like being an orphan or a little girl who was secretly a witch that lived deep in the woods.
On the day I wore this outfit, Little Rabbit needed to feel extra powerful…to be a Super Hero or maybe a powerful good witch. The purple scarf was perfect for this as it sort of felt like a cape — I switched it’s position all day by how I felt. The sequins on the scarf also added to this effect. I chose a single wooden turquoise earring to wear. This earring actually has a lot of history and meaning for me. I stole the earrings from my Mother a few years ago…I had loved them during my childhood, I remember pawing through her jewelry box and admiring them. The earring has a lot of power for me and an earthy quality that I think helped play up the feeling I was going for. Lastly I lined my eyes with purple eyeshadow giving them a slight mask effect, this was my favorite part of the outfit.
I am really enjoying listening and checking in with this younger part of myself; she is directing my memory and fashion in areas I wouldn’t normally go. Sometimes it just feels good to have your outfit be a costume, to hide behind if you need to or to engage your imagination creating a fantasy or adventure in your day.

your poses are different from usual in these photos…:)
i find it very interesting how you use fashion to explore your self… did you dress up a lot as a child?
I did enjoy playing dress up as a kid…but more than playing at it it was something I enjoyed on a day-to-day basis. I would enjoy planning my outfits. Like I’d choose yellow overalls and pigtails and it would feel like a specific character, creating a distinct story or fantasy. Or when I was playing I wouldn’t just play “Dress up” but dressing up would be involved in whatever I was playing. Maybe I would don a hat pack a toy pistol in my handbag or wear glasses and braids and spy on neighbors taking notes. Outfits were always a part of play from about age 8+.
Do you think you learned it from someone else? or was it spontaneous?
It was all in my head. Its not something I vocalized or really understood until now. I’m really only now feeling free enough to embrace it. It was spontaneous.
This post made me smile
I particularly enjoyed the bit on the skirt having a “really great swishy effect”
Dressing up was so fun! I think it allowed so much fun leniency&enthusiasm to be whatever side of your personality you felt like being!
I love that scarf!
I find that I really like the look of scarves when other people wear them, when I try, I fail. You know when something just doesn’t fit with your personality or personal style, but you still like it regardless?
That opens up a whole other can of worms, though .. doesn’t it? People who wear things they shouldn’t to try and fit in. Or, people who wear things that they shouldn’t … because they just shouldn’t. I like how you’ve described your look. It’s meaningful, and you’ve not just bought it because it comes from Urban Outfitters. I’m not sure if you’re a fan of that store, I guessss they have some nice things, but I find most of their clothing very poorly made.
Anywho, I am rambling. Bottom line: very cute outfit and lovely hair
